Retina and functions of retina:
Retina is a thin layer of nervous tissues inside the eyes the main function of the retina is that it perceives the light and convert it to neural signals to the brain and thus aids in the vision.

As of now the answer is "Definitely not"
Once the retina gets damaged it won’t be replaced. but the invention of the bionic eye would be the perfect thing for those who are all having retinal impairments in the eyes.

Components of bionic eye:
- Micro electrode
- Glasses for the vision with built in camera
Action performed by the components:
The micro electrode is placed inside the eyes with a system of complex surgery. Why the electrode is actually placed inside the eyes means that the micro electrode takes over the function of the diseased cells (damaged cells) in the eyes.
The micro electrode transmits the impulse (signal) to the camera that is attached on the glasses and thus the affected person perceives the vision (Which is actually a function of retina)
This is a boon to those who are all having complete impairments in their eyes especially on retina.
Like having two sides to a coin the implantation of the bionic eyes having its own disadvantages too
- Though the bionic eye implanted individuals can’t able to get 100% vision (but after the retinal prostheses the person could able to see things to an extent)
- This bionic eyes technology is only at the initial stage and it needs to be tamed in the forthcoming days.
- In some countries like India the cost of the bionic eye implantation (the retinal detachment surgery) is expected to be nearly around 50,000 USD (22lakh Indian rupees approximately) and additional charges for the surgery. This couldn’t be affordable for all.
- Some practical difficulties include less specialized medical facilities.
Hope that governments, doctors, medical insurance companies all over the world came forward to develop the retinal prostheses to next level and thus ensures the people to live a healthy and prosperous life.
