The swirling disaster

Air current (Cyclone vs hurricanes) all  you want to know about the cyclones and its formation.

Check it out how cyclones are formed below,

As a school going child, we will get excited to know about the formation of cyclone as we will get some leave.

On a serious note the effect of these cyclones are huge. In this article, we will see about the formation of the cyclones.

" Low pressure depression forms over Bay of Bengal heavy rain is expected over the coastal areas of Tamilnadu" is the common phrase that we came across during monsoon via newspapers and news channels.

What is  low-pressure depression?

Low-pressure depression aka low pressure system is nothing but an area where the atmospheric pressure is lesser than elsewhere in its surroundings.

What will be the standard atmospheric pressure?

The standard atmospheric pressure is 101325pa or 760mmHg or 1.01325bar.

If the pressure falls below the standard atmospheric pressure value then there would be an immediate chance of formation of low pressure depression.

The atmospheric pressure (atm) in short is usually expressed in terms of pascals (pa).

How the atmospheric pressure is calculated?

The atmospheric pressure is calculated with the help of an instrument called Aneroid Barometer.

What is atmospheric pressure?

It is the pressure exerted on the surface area by the weight of the air above the surface of the air. Now, here we comes to an important point.

How the cyclones are formed?

When the convection (veppasalanam) causes warm and moist air above the ocean ( that is when the water temperature rises to 80F or 27°C or even hotter) cyclones will form.

How the cyclones appears like a wheel?

     Here comes an interesting concept
"CORIOLIS EFFECT"

"Air deflects from right in northern hemisphere and the air deflects from left in southern hemisphere. This contrary movement in air causes the cyclones to be appear like a wheel".

At the same time why the predictions in the pathway of the cyclone fails too often?

Yes, exactly the same thing happens in case of the cyclone Amphan too.

When the atmospheric pressure alters than normal in an area the cyclone tends to move there in order maintain an equilibrium in the atmospheric pressure thats why the pathway of the cyclones changes too often.

As the pressure decreases further and if favourable conditions prevailing in the Ocean means the cyclone is more likely to be intensified.

How the cyclones are named?

A question that is encircled our minds for the past here's the answer for that.

In the year 2000, group of countries forming an organisation called World Meteorological Organisation- WMO . And the naming of cyclones were started in the year 2004. Before that the cyclones were estimated as
  • Cyclone
  • Severe cyclonic storm
  • Super cyclonic storm based on their intensity.
WMO includes Bangladesh,India, Maldives, Myanmar,Oman, Pakistan, Srilanka, Thailand

In order avoid any confusions among the people, news readers Meteorological officials and to assess the damage caused by the cyclones and to compare their devastating effects with the cyclones that were occuring in the past.

  • The names of the cyclone should be short and should not exceed 8 letters

  • The name should be normal and should not hurt others either politically and religiously

  • The name should not be repetitive.

  • The names mentioned should be correctly pronounced (Voice).

  • Recently the WMO further included Iran, Qatar,Saudi Arabia,Yemen, United Arab Emirates in 2018 for naming the cyclones.

  • Further the name list of upcoming 169 cyclones are already been prepared by the countries who are members in World Meteorological Organisation -WMO.

And most recently 'Nivar' is the name of the cyclone given by Iran. In their language Nivar means light. Quite an opposite name indeed.

That's all we collected about Cyclone and it's formation. Hope this
will be an informative article to you.
