Processor - The tiny brain of your device

We are in lockdown almost all the countries around the world is severely suffering from lockdown. Amidst most of the educational institutions conducting the students online classes.

This is the right moment for many mobile phone manufacturers and offline stores to sell the mobile phones multiple times with drastic price hike.

Objective:

In this blog we tried to bring you an insight about how to choose your mobile phones on the basis of their performance which is the prime thing for the students for attending their online classes and for other purposes.

For higher performance Central Processing Unit Graphic Processing Unit(CPU+GPU) app opening time, gaming, RAM management, Memory management and better image processing . A good quality chipset is a essential one. Nowadays the manufacturers competing with one another for providing better value for money.

What is a processor?

A Processor's primary job is to receive the input and transfer output to various cores. A core is a small processor built inside the big processor. For simple understanding, it's job is that receiving input and turned into output

A processor is simply a job assigning tool in a system. Better the processor, we will get our job done quickly such as fast opening of apps, smooth running of games and so on.

Basic things that we need to know about a processor are,
  1. Brand
  2. Clock speed
  3. No of cores
  4. Nanometre of cores
Do number of cores matters?

The processor is build in a series of cores such as Quadcore (4), Octacore (8) and Decacore (10).

Now the octacore chips are used in almost all the phones.Higher the number of cores higher its performance and its battery consumption.

what is clock speed in chipset?

Clock speed is nothing but how quickly the information (data) is carried out in between the cores.

Here, a short demo in that the chip acts as a home for providing power to various components of mobile to perform various activities.

For example, In a octacore chip there are 4 powerful cores and 4 power efficient cores in general but this may vary as per manufacturers. If the chip is clocked at 1.8GHz means in that speed the information is carried out between the cores of the chips.

Clock speed measures the time taken by the processor to complete one cycle of transferring jobs. It is usually measured in gigahertz or megahertz. One gigahertz is equal to one billion cycles per second and one megahertz is equal to one million cycles per second.

As the clock speed increases time required to do an operation (app opening time) shrinks simultaneously the heating up of the system (phones) also increases. So do select a mobile phone processor with optimal clock speed.

Does size of the processor matters?
As the chipsets are manufactured in semiconductor (silicon) the size of the chipset also determines the power efficiency. It is normally indicated by nanometres Smaller the size of chip higher its battery efficiency.

For example, in the retail units it is indicated as 10nm or 14nm. Smaller the size of chip higher its battery efficiency.

Similarly, word size also matters. The word size  is how many bits a processor can run at a time. Previously, 32 bit processors are used but nowadays most of the smartphones use 64 bit processor.

A 32 bit processor can process 2 to the power of 32 bits at a time and a 64 bit processor can process 2 to the power of 64 bits at a time. Higher the word size, smaller the processor will be.

A high word size can also reduce the stress that ultimately results in high battery efficiency.

What are the important mobile processors in the market?

1) Bionic by Apple
2) Exynos by Samsung
3) Snapdragon by Qualcomm
4) Mediatek by Taiwan manufacturers

Brief information about merits and demerits of processors.

Bionic:
Apple doesn't to be introduced to the extent that all of their products are of the best quality and service and it is superior to all the mobile chips.
Nothing to complain about Apple except their pricing.

Qualcomm Snapdragon:
An US manufacturer predominantly manufacturing mobile chipsets lots of mobile phone manufacturers demands Qualcomm to have the Snapdragon processor on their mobile phones. Their GPU name is Adreno.

In Snapdragon, there are five series of processors such as 200, 400, 600, 700 and 800. The midrange smartphones use processors of 600 and 700 series while flagship smartphones use 800 series. 200 and 400 series is for entry level smartphones. Unlike others in Snapdragon processors both the CPU AND GPU are manufactured by wholly by them.

Most recently Qualcomm introduce Snapdragon SoC 690 which is paired with x51 modem for 5G capabilities at lower pricing. Expecting a 5G chipset in budget phones soon in India

In general higher the number of cores higher its performance but in Snapdragon they change their architecture of chip designing to bring higher performance as well as power efficient too.! and they developed their own GPU too which ensures better graphics related activities.

Demerits: Comparitively higher in cost than others.
A Taiwanese semiconductor and wireless devices manufacturer whom makes a close competition with Snapdragon processor in Android sector. Their GPU name is Mali.

Merits: Relatively cheaper than its competitors . Developing some improved architecture for battery efficiency.

Demerits: Increases the core for its performance which leads to higher battery consumption.

Exynos:
The Exynos chipset is from Samsung, the reigning king of the smartphone world.
Their GPU name is Mali. In most of the markets Samsung sold their phones with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors but in very few markets like India they'll go for Exynos processors at same price or even higher prices. Don't know why..?

Merits: Slots in between Snapdragon and mediatek and serves as a predominant choice among users. In some aspects it comes close to Snapdragon processor.

Demerits : Comparitively lower in game quality than its competitors.
