Bioluminescence Plants - Future Street lights

" The Science of today is the technology of tomorrow"

                                                                - Edward Teller

There are so many beautiful things were happening around us but most of us never mind about those. Technology and science are blended together and keeps on improving day by day. From these things scientist around the globe keep on trying to exploit those things as much as they can for the sake of the mankind.

In this post we tried to convey the readers about one such noble innovative thing that would possibly light up the near future. Without wasting time lets dive on to this….

Bioluminescence:

We all are known about the fireflies they glow in night. But how this happens just a simple mechanism behind this. This is called as bioluminescence. This bioluminescence is often called as "cold light" as it generates only a small amount of heat which is 20%. Most of the bioluminescence organisms are Marine species. Only a few are there that lives in land including Fireflies.

Some of the bioluminescent organisms are,

  • Water Jelly (Aequoria victoria)
  • Bobtail Squid (Euprymna berryi)
  • Angler Fish (Linophryne bicornis)
  • Bitter Oyster (Panellus stipticus)
  • Firefly (Lampyridae)
  • Lantern Fish (Symbolophorus veranys)
  • Mushroom (Armilleria mellea)

How this bioluminescence happens?

  • Calcium initially combines with the ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) which is the energy currency of the living world.
  • This tends to the production of the luciferin a chemical compound that is responsible for the producing light. Luciferin is a substrate in chemical reaction. The colour of the light (bioluminescent) depends on the arrangement of luciferin molecules. (In case of Fireflies, the bioluminescent colour is yellow)
  • Then the oxidized luciferin interacts with an enzyme called luciferase and create a by-product called Oxyluciferin. This ultimately leads to the production of the light.

So, scientist around the globe are trying to exploit this marvel for the sake of mankind.

Bioluminescent plants:

In the fireflies a gene Luc-1 gene is responsible for the production of the luciferase enzyme and thus bright yellow light production occurs in fireflies. Another gene Luc-2 is responsible for the production of dull yellow light production.

So, scientist decided to isolate this gene especially the gene Luc-1 from fireflies and incorporate those genes in the trees and made it as a GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) and planting those trees around the roadside. And this serves as a street lamps as a result of this a huge portion of the electricity production should be conserved. And thus surplus electricity can be used to light up the rest of world where people can't able to access electricity.

This is way cheaper than solar, hydroelectric or any other conventional and non-conventional sources of power supply till date.

And it is now also be practically followed that these genetically modified small plants were planted along the divider in the highways in some countries.

The best part is that it is also commercially available in some e-commerce shopping sites like Amazon.

We don't have any idea about the luminescence property of such trees or plants on commercial aspects. If you wanna buy it it would be at your own risk. This blog is completely about that noble innovation.
