In the recently conducted Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple announced the much awaited iOS 18 which is the interet sensation fir the past few days. Apple brought forward some “really” major updates with this software update that made some awestruck and some disappointed. In this article, we will dwell into the features that is being released with iOS 18 excluding apple intelligence which we will cover in upcoming articles. Let’s start.

Icon movement:

Apple introduced the option to drag your icons and place it wherever you want in the home screen. Yes, you read it correct. Till now, iOS doesn’t have this option. Quite shocking indeed. This is an age old feature in Android but only sees light in IOS now only. Anyway it’s a good update especially for those who like to customise their homescreen to the fullest. I meant fullest intentionally as there are few more customisations available which we can see in upcoming sections.

Dark icons:

Another surprising late update from Apple is the Dark icons feature. Apple introduced the Dark Mode feature with the release of iOS 13 itself but with iOS 18 only they introduced this icons to be “Dark”. This feature has polarised response among iOS users. Some really like the finishing of the icons but sone really don’t. Anyway there is an option to keep light icons in dark mode itself or you can let your iPhone to automatically choose it for you based on the wallpaper used.

Tinted icons:

This is the most exciting update in my point of view. Using this option you can customise the colour of  “all” icons the way to match the wallpaper. This completely changes the static monotonous look of iPhone home screens used to look. But this made some who love minimalistic look to hate this. Also, some compare this with android but according to me Apple perfectly implemented this feature. Good one.

New control center:

The revamped Control Center now includes newly arranged sets of controls, which you can access more seamlessly. Apple revamped the curved display of options in control centre to rounded options. By simply swiping down continuously from the Home Screen, you can effortlessly reach these controls, enhancing the ease and efficiency of navigation. You can add more controls from the Controls Gallery, which showcases all your options in one convenient location, including new controls from your favorite apps. In simple terms, you can customise your control center to look like any other phones’ notification pane.

Improved messaging:

Apple has made a lot of improvements in iMessage. Beyond the standard formatting options like bold, italics, underline, and strikethrough, iMessage allows you to add playful, animated effects to individual letters, words, phrases, or emojis. Many of these effects are even suggested automatically as you type. Apple also introduced schedule later option with iMessage. Another cool update in iMessage is the satellite messaging option. Without internet or cellular network, you can send abs receive messages now. Also, for users not on iMessage, Apple offers RCS (Rich Communication Services) messages deliver enhanced media features and include delivery and read receipts.

Math Notes:

With iOS 18, you can perform mathematical calculations using Apple notes. This is also one of the coolest updates in iOS 18. Yes, this is achievable in android way before but with the help of a third party app while in iOS you can have this in the default notes app itself. Another coolest add-on to this feature is you can perform mathematical operations with handwritten notes itself. One slight drawback is that it cannot perform calculus as of now. Hope they resolve this in one of the upcoming rollouts.

Face lock extension:

With iOS 18, you can use Face id to lock applications. Earlier face lock available only for locking the device.

Air Pay:

With iOS 18, payment can be done between two iPhones by just bringing each other nearby using the newly improved Apple Wallet app.

Password app:

Apple introduces a dedicated password app to securely store all the passwords.

Safari highlights:

Apple introduces the “highlights” feature with the Safari browser. With this Safari, highlights and shows the key information that you are looking for in a website using AI.

Game mode:

With iOS 18, Apple introduces Game mode which reduces background activity enabling high frame rate improving seamless gameplay.

Lock screen options:

With iOS 18, you can swap the torch and camera options with the options you want.

These are some of the key features of iOS 18. Although there are some strong views regarding some of the features from Android users that these are age old features that they are already enjoying, I believe that Apple implemented these with utmost perfection than Android like they always do. Lets wait till iOS 18 officially roll outs to all supported devices.

Apart from these, there is a major update which id “Apple intelligence”. Apple introduces Apple intelligence only for high end devices with A17 Bionic chip. In upcoming articles, we will try to cover the features that Apple came up with Apple intelligence. Also Apple launches Watch OS 11 for smart Apple watches. We will try to cover that as well.

Thank you.
